And let’s go to the movie theaters. The popcorn movie season is back and nearly every genre — comedy, horror, action, romance, drama — is well represented in what appears to be the deepest schedule for summer theatrical releases in a few years (yes, there are streaming film releases on the horizon as well). Antioch’s celebrated Red Caboose, for nearly four decades the home to a restaurant, has found a new life at the Antioch Historical Society Museum where an exhibit honoring the city’s long train history is being assembled. The popular restaurant on Fulton Shipyard Road in north Antioch was destroyed by fire in March of last year, but the caboose attached to the main building remained intact. Unable to rebuild because of asbestos in the main structure, the Jim and Phyllis Boccio family sold the structures to the nearby Drill Tech Drilling and Shoring, which in turn agreed to donate the caboose to the museum. And, on April 14, Drill Tech made good on its promise, hauling the caboose’s “truck” – the wheels and carriage – on a flatbed to the museum for placement on the tracks the museum had secured and installed, and later undergoing the arduous task of hauling the heavy caboose down Highway 4 to the museum nearly three miles to the west.
