GALWAY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Galway Central School District in Saratoga County is trying to undertake a major capital project to add improvements to the town school. Brita Donovan the Superintendent wants to make safety and capacity improvements to sports facilities, ADA compliance, and building security upgrades. She was disappointed when the matter failed to pass a town vote by 179 to 833. Her theory: “It would result in a tax impact which is significant on our community,” said Donovan.The $37 Million bill would be footed by property taxes. A homeowner in Galway for example, would see their taxes increase $1.46 for every thousand $1,000 their property is worth. Donovan is now looking for grant funding and wants to pitch the project to the community in portions rather than a mass undertaking. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Mufid Fawaz Alkhader is facing a second charge: Conspiracy to make a false statement during the purchase of a firearm. Court documents allege he had a friend buy a shotgun for him back in November, that was later used outside Temple Israel in Albany hours before the first night of Hanukkah. According to those documents, Alkhader told police he wanted to buy a gun but was ineligible because of a prior order of protection or restraining order. He then contacted a friend, identified in the court documents at "Co-Conspirator #1," who agreed to purchase a shotgun for him. That individual told police they were given $700 cash to buy the gun and paid at least $200 to make the purchase, lying on the ATF forms in the process, which is a federal crime. ST. LOUIS – More than 30 people traveling by bus from El Paso, Texas, to Chicago to become citizens and find work were abandoned at the St. Louis Gateway Transportation Center.The group included men, women, and children, few of whom spoke English, which created a language barrier for first responders.It's unclear who dropped the group off and left without giving them additional support to make sure they reached their destination.
