DENVER (KDVR) — A bill that would have repealed Colorado's ban on rent control has died in committee.House Bill 1115 was heard Tuesday evening in the Senate Local Government and Housing Committee. Lawmakers killed the bill in a 4-3 vote. The bill would have allowed local governments to enact rent control policies. Rent control is prohibited under state law, and the proposal would have lifted the ban."We really need to do something to make sure that people can live in the communities that they work in," Rep. Javier Mabrey, a prime sponsor Democrat who represents Denver and Jefferson counties, has said of the rent control effort. Want lower RTD fares? It's possible next year. Here’s how to make your voice heard. The measure had better support in the House, where it passed on third reading in a 40-24 vote. It's unclear how the bill would have fared if it cleared the Senate. Gov. Jared Polis publicly opposed rent stabilization in a mobile home protection bill last year. LOVELAND SKI AREA, Colo. (KDVR) -- Loveland Ski Area started the lifts Tuesday morning with 4 inches of fresh snowfall overnight and more snow on the way. "We could see up to a foot of fresh snow for tomorrow morning," said John Sellers, the Marketing Director Loveland Ski Area. The Pinpoint Weather team is forecasting a snowstorm to blow into Colorado Tuesday and Sellers said they are excited for all the snow. He said Loveland Ski Area's location is a total bonus. "Our elevation helps us a lot. Right here at the base, we are at 10,800 feet, so we can hold snow all season," Sellers said. Despite Colorado often experiencing spring snowstorms, Sellers said the ski area usually sets its closing date for the first week of May. He said there have been only a few seasons when the ski area has stayed open into mid-May. The reason for that closing date is so they can start getting ready for summer projects on the mountain. The tire of a fire truck responding to a gas leak in Holden had to be removed from a sinkhole Tuesday after part of a road gave way, officials said. In a statement, the Holden Fire Department said its crews responded around 12:30 p.m. after a MassDOT contractor struck an underground natural gas main in the 1000 block of Main Street. Officials said crews arriving at the scene found a large gas leak coming from a trench in the roadway that was being excavated. The leak prompted a roughly two-hour closure on Main Street as Eversource personnel responded to repair the damage, the fire department said. In the meantime, officials said a portion of road roughly 300 feet from the gas leak collapsed under a parked fire truck. Photos from the scene showed one of the truck’s wheels stuck in the sinkhole. The fire department said the truck was later removed with no injuries to anyone on scene and only minor damage.Stolen wheelchair-accessible van returned to mother with disabled son

A Brockton mom was reunited with her stolen minivan Tuesday after police tracked it down Monday night. A matter of days after the van was taken from a spot outside her home Saturday morning, Sandra Tavares is now thanking those involved in bringing the van back. “I don’t even know how to describe how I feel,” she said. Tavares said the van was taken while she quickly ran back inside her home to grab her wallet. She was devastated because the wheelchair-accessible van serves as a link to the outside world for her 8-year-old son Neyden. “The van is everything for us because Neyden is everything for us,” Tavares said.Tavares spent years saving up for the van after Neyden was hit by a car and left severely disabled in 2016. Speaking this week, Tavares said Neyden smiled when she told him they got the van back. Tavares said she reported the stolen van to police. Brockton police then said a patrol officer noticed the van parked behind an apartment build...Two people taken to hospital after crash at Lexington car wash

Orioles left fielder Austin Hays left Tuesday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox after the third inning with a bruised right hand, which seemingly stemmed from a failed bunt attempt in the bottom half of that frame.Initial X-rays did not show any breaks, the Orioles said, and Hays will undergo further testing.“We caught a break there with the X-rays being negative, so that’s great news,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “It’s day-to-day. It’s obviously really sore. I think we got lucky.”With the Orioles trailing 7-0, Hays attempted to bunt on an 88 mph sinker from Boston right-hander Corey Kluber, but the pitch tailed in and hit the fingers of Hays’ right hand, which were wrapped around the bat, before the ball went foul. Hays flied out to deep right field on the next pitch before being replaced in left by Terrin Vavra for the top of the fourth. Before Tuesday, Hays had played in the outfield for all but eight of the Orioles’...Corey Kluber holds Orioles down in best start of the season

In 2017, Chris Sale and Corey Kluber vied for the American League Cy Young, finishing runner-up and winner, respectively. In 2023, they’re teammates two of the game’s most veteran pitchers, just trying to leave years of injuries in the dust and prove they can still get the job done. How to explain the role reversal between these two veteran pitchers between their starts last week and these? A baseball reboot of ‘Freaky Friday,’ perhaps. After striking out 11 in last week’s start against the Twins, Sale didn’t get a single strikeout in Monday’s series opener in Baltimore.Kluber had allowed 17 earned runs on 19 hits over his first four starts (18 innings), and was looking to rebound after getting shelled by the Twins for seven earned runs over five frames. The 37-year-old righty not only bounced back, but finished the night with his best start of the season thus far. He kept the Orioles scoreless through four, and ended up completing six innings f...After Kyle Bradish struggles, Orioles’ rally in 9th falls short in 8-6 loss to Red Sox, ending 7-game winning streak

The Orioles entered Tuesday night’s bottom of the ninth three outs from only their second game of the season decided by more than five runs, a trend manager Brandon Hyde joked earlier in the day was “not great for the blood pressure.”But even in a game Baltimore faced seven-run deficits early and late, the Orioles did little to spare the hearts of Hyde or the announced crowd of 14,343 at Camden Yards. Cedric Mullins’ ninth-inning grand slam was not enough to make up for the one Kyle Bradish allowed early as an 8-6 loss ended Batimore’s seven-game winning streak.During it, Orioles (15-8) starting pitchers allowed nine runs over 41 2/3 innings. Bradish then surrendered seven while recording as many outings. In his major league debut — the anniversary of which is Saturday — Bradish held the Red Sox to two earned runs over six innings. Since, he has surrendered 24 earned runs in 19 innings across five starts to Baltimore’s American League ...Chicago Cubs notes: Kyle Hendricks to begin a rehab assignment, while David Ross pays tribute to Beth Murphy

Kyle Hendricks’ months-long journey to get back on the mound for the Chicago Cubs is nearing its conclusion.Hendricks is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday at Triple-A Iowa, his final step before rejoining the rotation. Manager David Ross estimated Hendricks will go four innings and throw about 60 pitches in his first start. The Cubs will see how it goes from there, Ross said, and would like to get him multiple rehab starts.Ross avoided giving a specific number of outings until Hendricks would be ready to come off the injured list, saying “there’s a lot of variables in that that can also change.”“So we’re going to make sure we bring him up here when he’s healthy and can help us win baseball games,” Ross said Tuesday.Hendricks, 33, hasn’t pitched in a big-league game since July 5 because of a capsular tear in his right shoulder. He shortened his arm path to clean up his delivery and hopefully avoid a recurrence of the ...Japanese company: ‘High probability’ lander crashed on moon

By MARCIA DUNN (AP Aerospace Writer)A Japanese company’s spacecraft apparently crashed while attempting to land on the moon Wednesday, losing contact moments before touchdown and sending flight controllers scrambling to figure out what happened.More than six hours after communication ceased, the Tokyo company ispace finally confirmed what everyone had suspected, saying there was “a high probability” that the lander had slammed into the moon.It was a disappointing setback for ispace, which after a 4 1/2-month mission had been on the verge of doing what only three countries have done: successfully land a spacecraft on the moon.Takeshi Hakamada, founder and CEO of ispace, held out hope even after contact was lost as the lander descended the final 33 feet (10 meters). Flight controllers peered at their screens in Tokyo as minutes went by with only silence from the moon.A grim-faced team surrounded Hakamada as he announced that the landing likely failed.Official word fi...Latest news
